Description
This icon is thought to have originated in Constantinople in the 13th century before it was lost in 1438, and astoundingly recovered in pristine state over 140 years later in 1579. It is believed the Mother of God appeared to a nine-year-old girl, Matrona, and told her to find the icon amid the ashes of a burned house. After she recovered the precious icon it was believed it was hidden there to save it from the Tatars. This Virgin Mary depiction is very popular in Eastern Orthodoxy and many churches were built in honor of the revelation of the Virgin of Kazan, and copies of the image were displayed at the Kazan Cathedral of Moscow.
