A Message from our Founder, Gabriela

“Hello, my name is Gabriela and I am the founder of Art of the Icon. My family and I started Art of the Icon when we noticed how many false Christian Icon paintings were being sold online. So, I asked them to help me create Art of the Icon, an online shop that provides authentically crafted, genuine Christian Icons.

Our Icons are hand-crafted in Greece and ship from the United States. Our Icons are worked on by experienced hagiographers with the knowledge of hand-made serigraphy. Each Icon has been finalized by conservators and specialized artisans.

Each Icon comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, including a certificate verification stamp from the conservator’s approval.

Thank you for supporting Art of the Icon, we appreciate your help in bringing genuine, hand-crafted traditional Christian Icons to the online community.”

Our History

Our story began over 40 years ago when a young couple from Crete began painting their Icons. The Vasarmidis family, a husband and wife team, upheld the true standards of iconography and the sacred tradition that Icons have represented for centuries. Over the years, we have continued to protect the standards of genuine iconography. Our Icons are made with the same level of quality you can expect from the very beginnings of the art form. What began as a small shop has now turned into a global phenomenon, as we are the best place to purchase gifts for religious people.

When you purchase artwork from us, you are receiving one of the world’s highest-quality Icon pieces. To date, there are only three factories left doing this sacred art form with traditional iconography standards. The same can not be said by other religious stores that sell subpar quality items in comparison to our methods and quality materials.

Why Art of the Icon?

Our team holds a deep respect and understanding of the history of the Orthodox Christian Icons and religious paintings. Their significance in religious and cultural history continues to make an impact today, centuries after their introduction.

Christian icons have long been celebrated as “windows into the world of the sacred”, highlighting the importance of upholding pieces to a certain standard of quality and excellence. Our mission is simple – to provide our customers with high-grade products and to preserve true iconography.

Our mother company started in Greece in 1975 with a small shop in Plaka, Athens. Since then, we have become the largest Icon company in the world.

We have 55 iconographers on staff, expertly handcrafting beautiful artwork and creating collections exclusive to our company. In addition to our exclusive collection created by our iconographers, we boast a large collection of Icons made by monks from the holy mountain of Mt Athos.

About our icons…

Our Icons are made on hardwood with gilding made of pure silver and 24k gold leafing. We use eight coats of Gesso glue for the wood, each coat needing to dry before the next coat is applied. The board is slightly sanded to prepare for painting. Once the Gesso glue is dried, it is prepared for a line drawing on canvas made from pure burlap. Unlike poor-quality Icons with pieces of paper glued onto the wood, our Icons are real, genuine works of art. They are timeless collectibles that our customers are proud to display.

Byzantine Tradition

Faithfully adhering to the rules of Icon Creation.

When looking for Byzantine icons for sale, rest assured that all materials we use are pure, including paint made from pure pigments of color from nature. An egg tempera is used in the paint with holy water. As part of the sacred tradition of Icon artwork established by the Byzantine Empire, icons must be one-dimensional and images cannot be smiling or too earthly.
All Icons are observed to be sacred and a means of spiritual worship between the earthly and heavenly realms.

Meeting of the Bishop of Rome Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew.

Two of the most important and influential religious leaders in the world meetup to discuss human rights issues, theological matters, and have grown a great respect for each other and their churches.

In 2014, in Jerusalem the Pope gives an incredible gift to Orthodox Christians by selflessly giving the remains of Saint Peter found buried under the Vasilica of Saint Peter’s in Rome. The bones are today held next to Saint Andrews bones in the Fanari compound in Istanbul, Turkey where the Patriarch remains to this day.
