Description
This icon of Jesus Christ is inspired by a 13th century icon of Jesus Pantocrator from the Vatopedi Monastery in Mount Athos, Greece. Icons of Jesus Christ Pantocrator are amongst the most popular and important Orthodox icons as they depict Jesus as sovereign. In fact, Pantocrator means “God Almighty,” “Lord of Hosts,” or “All-powerful,” highlighting the role of Jesus as King of Kings. Icons of Jesus Christ Pantocrator are found in many Byzantine churches, usually as a fresco or mosaic in the church’s central dome. It is one of the first and oldest ways to depict Jesus in the Orthodox faith. The red background and gold trim on the icon are used to represent His resurrection and life (red) and His status as the Son of God and King of Kings (gold).
