Orthodox Christ Icon – Jesus Christ

The leader of Christianity born in Bethlehem in a manger to Mary and Joseph. The oldest icons of Jesus are deeply connected to the early history of Christian art.

At approximately 30 years of age, he sets out traveling through the area preaching the word of God. Thousands of people flock to hear him speak and preach. It was in 28 A.D. that his first miracle was documented. At a wedding in Cana he turns holy water into wine. Huge crowds follow Jesus and his disciples. This only furthers to anger Kings and religious leaders everywhere, eventually leading to his death by crucifixion. Christ icons have been widely accepted as powerful symbols of religious faith, and early examples helped establish artistic conventions which continue to influence the appearance of the Jesus icon Orthodox tradition today.

Christ Icons in Orthodox Tradition

There are many different Christ icons, each presenting a unique aspect of Christ’s identity, ministry or relationship with humanity. Some depict Christ as the Pantocrator, or Almighty, emphasizing His divine authority, while others portray Him as the compassionate Saviour, teacher or shepherd – each Jesus Orthodox icon rooted in meaning. Although these images can differ in composition and symbolism, an orthodox icon of Christ follows a visual language rooted in centuries of Christian tradition. The purpose is not simply to create a portrait, but to provide a sacred image through which the viewer can contemplate the person of Christ from their Christ icon.
