Description
The Birth of Jesus Christ, also referred to as The Nativity, depicts the newborn Jesus on the eve of His birth. In the centre of the icon is the baby Christ in a cave, being watched over by two animals and an angel. Outside the cave, also in the centre, is the Virgin Mary; and behind her is Saint Joseph, shown contemplating the events. In other icons of The Nativity, Saint Joseph is shown speaking with an old man, which represents the doubts being planted in his mind by the devil.
The angels at the top of the icon are shown to be celebrating and spreading the news of His birth. There is also a star in the icon, representing the star that guided the Wise Men to the newborn Jesus Christ. The feast of The Nativity is celebrated on December 25 by Western Christian churches and on January 7 by Eastern Orthodox churches.
