Description
The icon of the Vaioforos, or the Entry into Jerusalem, depicts Jesus as He arrives in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The city of Jerusalem is shown on the right side of the icon and features a domed Temple. To the left of Jerusalem is the Mount of Olives, which is prevalent in much of the bible. During Jesus’ life many important events occurred in the Mount of Olives including His ascension into heaven.
In the centre of the icon is Jesus atop a donkey, riding toward Jerusalem. Behind Him are His disciples, led by John and Peter who are often referred to as the “pillars of the Church.” In front of Him are children laying palm branches down in His path. There is also a child depicted cutting down palms from the tree in the background. Outside of Jerusalem’s city walls are the Hebrews, celebrating Passover. According to tradition they are chanting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!”(Matthew 21:9).
Jesus is further depicted with a halo, symbolizing his status as the King of Kings. He is also seen holding a scroll, referencing his Holy Wisdom and glory. The date of Palm Sunday changes annually and signifies the end of the Lenten Period and the start of Holy Week.
