Description
St. Veronica, flourished in the 1st century, she was a renowned legendary woman whose accounts differ between Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church.
In one account Saint Veronica was moved by the sight of Jesus Christ carrying His cross to Golgotha. She gave Him her kerchief to wipe his brow, after He handed it back imprinted with the image of His face. Her imprinted kerchief is commonly known as the Veil of Veronica or just Veronica. There are several existing images that are each reported to be the original relic are early copy on the original.
In another account: For many years Saint Veronica had “suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and nothing had helped, but instead she became worse” (Mark 5:26).
Veronica had heard of Jesus Christ and decided to go to Him, believing she would be healed by touching His garment. In a crowded street she was able to touch Him, the Savior surprised to feel the healing power gone forth from Him. He turned to the crowd and asked who had touched His garment. His disciples were confused by the question, as it was a very crowded street everyone was bumping into one another. Saint Veronica came forward and fell down before Him trembling in fear and admitted what she had done. The Lord said, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction” (Mark 5:34).
She was so grateful she made a statue of Jesus and placed it in front of her home, where everyone could revere it. A healing plant grew at the base of the statue, which was able to cure various diseases. Later, Saint Veronica became a member of the early Church. After living a life of holiness, she surrendered her soul to God.
Feast Day is July 12th for Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church
