Description
Known as one of the three Virgin Marys and martyrs, Saint Valentina was born in Caesarea of Palestine. During the Empire of Galerius Maximilian, Saint Valentina chose to be sentenced to death in a brutal way instead of making sacrifice to pagan gods. As the story goes Valentina and her friend Thea joined a group of Christians gathered to hear the Holy Scriptures. Local authority interrupted the meeting, grabbed Thea and tortured her. Valentina cried out, “How long will you torcher my sister?” When the pagans reacted to her and grabbed her as well. Valentina was dragged away to be burned on an altar the heathens had set-up. Valentina kicked over the altar with her feet. Then, Valentina and Thea were tied together and burnt alive. Saint Valentina’s Christian bond with Saint Thea was so strong that whether they were natural sisters, they were spiritual sisters. Saint Valentina was not going to let Saint Thea be martyred without her. The women died for their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in 308. The ancient Latin name “Valentina” means “strong, vigorous and healthy.”
We honor these Holy Virgin Martyrs on February 14th in the Roman Catholic Church and July 30th in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Holy Martyr Valentina, pray that our faith, and our determination to persevere in purity, always be strong and vigorous. Amen.
