Description
Saint Timotheos, also known as Apostle Timothy or Saint Timothy, was a companion of Saint Paul’s, often accompanying him on his travels. According to tradition, Saint Timotheos’ father was Greek, and his mother and grandmother – Eunice and Lois – were extremely pious women. He travelled with Saint Paul through Galatia, Phrygia, Mysia, Philippi, Berea, and eventually to Athens where he was sent with Silas to Thessaloniki.
Saint Timotheos later accompanied Saint Paul in Rome while Paul had been taken prisoner; later becoming ordained by Saint Paul as Timotheos Bishop of Ephesus. He served as Bishop for fifteen years, starting in 65 AD. In 80 AD, Saint Timotheos was killed by pagans after attempting to stop a procession of pagan idols. The pagan followers of the procession beat him before dragging him through the streets and eventually stoning him to death. Saint Timotheos is commemorated on January 22 in the Eastern Orthodox Church and on January 26 in the Roman Catholic Church.
