Description
Saint Paisios, also known as Paisios of Mount Athos or Father Paisios of the Holy Mountain, was a monk at Mount Athos where he served as an Elder. Born in 1924 in Cappadocia, Saint Paisios was baptized by Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian. As a young child, his family was forced to flee their home and walk to Greece where they settled in Konitsa, Epirus.
In 1950, Saint Paisios joined the monastery of Mount Athos and served as a novice for four years. He lived as an ascetic, practicing self-denial through fasting, prayer, and repentance; often only resting for 2-3 hours a night due to these practices. He was known for his kind and gentle mannerisms, with many visiting him in search of counsel, advice, and blessings.
On July 12, 1994, Saint Paisios passed away after suffering from several health issues, including hemorrhaging and a hernia. He was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on January 13, 2015 and is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on July 12.
