Description
Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos was born and raised on Zakynthos. He was the son of wealthy parents, Paulina and Mocius. When he was young he entered the monastery of the Strophada Islands, and it was there he begin his monastic journey. After some time he was appointed Archbishop of Aegina where he remaining serving its throne for a considerable time, once completed he returned to his homeland.
Once a man came to him in despair, he told him he had committed a murder and that he was being chased by the slain man’s family. He asked Saint Dionysius to give him protection. He agreed to this initially, even after learning that it was his own brother who the man had killed, Saint Dionysios said nothing, he hid the agony of his grief, and protected him as promised. When the authority arrived at the monastery asking questions, he told them that the murderer had come and gone in this direct and travelled by foot. When they had left the monastery, Saint Dionysios told the man the gravity of his sin and instructed him in repentance then sent him off having forgiven him his brother’s murder. According to local historic convention, this man later returned same monastery and became a monk. Saint Dionysius dead in peace in 1621, leaving behind his incorrupt and sacred relics as a treasure for his fellow citizens.
