Icons of Jesus Christ Pantocrator are amongst the most popular and important Orthodox icons as they depict Jesus as sovereign. In fact, Pantocrator means “God Almighty,” “Lord of Hosts,” or “All-powerful” highlighting the role of Jesus as King of Kings. Icons of Jesus Christ Pantocrator are found in many Byzantine churches, usually as a fresco or mosaic in the church’s central dome. It is one of the first and oldest ways to depict Jesus in the Orthodox faith.
In this icon Jesus is depicted standing, raising His right hand up in the sign of a blessing while He holds a book in His left hand. The book symbolizes Jesus’ Holy Wisdom and Holy Knowledge. He is further shown with a halo and the letters “IC XC”, which mean Jesus Christ in Greek. He is wearing a red robe with gold detailing, with red symbolizing His resurrection and life and gold representing His status as the Son of God and a divine being. On top of His red robe He is wearing green, which signifies eternal renovation in the Eastern Orthodox faith.
