Description
Myrrh is a reddish brown sap that comes from the Commiphora Myrrha tree that grows in northeast Africa and southwest Asia. Myrrh is bitter to the taste, highly aromatic with a rich sweet smell that has been with us since biblical times. The Hebrew word for Myrrh is Mawr meaning “distilled” the root word Marar meaning “bitterness”. Notably, Myrrh was one of the three gifts the wise men brought to Jesus on His birth, “Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11. This Myrrh anointing oil is symbolic of healing, prayer, the human nature of Christ, the suffering Savior and the Crucifixion.
