Description
The icon of the Virgin Mary Burning Bush, also called Theotokos the Unburnt Bush icon, is inspired by the miracle of the Burning Bush, witnessed by Moses. According to tradition, the Burning Bush is associated with the Virgin Mary, as the Unburnt Bush symbolizes the way in which the Theotokos gave birth as a virgin. There are several different depictions of the Virgin Mary Burning Bush, some depict Moses on the side while others include the symbols associated with Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – the Evangelists.
This icon depicts the Virgin Mary standing in the flames, with an image of an infant Jesus Christ in front of her. Above her are the letters ‘MP ΘY’, which mean Mother of God in Greek, while next to Jesus are the letters ‘IC XC’, which mean Jesus Christ in Greek. There are two angels depicted in the top corners, likely Archangels Michael and Gabriel, as they are often associated with imagery of the Theotokos and Child. The Greek Orthodox Church commemorates this icon on September 4.
