Description
The Virgin Mary Keharitomene, or Theotokos Kecharitomene, references the Virgin Mary as being the “most highly favoured” and the “Mother of God, full of grace.” The Virgin Mary was chosen by God to carry His Son on earth, thus, she is the most highly favoured.
The icon depicts the Theotokos tenderly holding an infant Jesus in her arms. Their faces are touching together in a loving embrace while Jesus softly caresses His mothers cheek. She is further depicted with a halo, highlighting her Holy status. In the top corners are the text ‘ΜΡ ΘΥ’, which mean “Mother of God” in Greek. Similarly, next to Jesus are the letters ‘ΙC XC’, meaning “Jesus Christ”. The icon is made in the Byzantine style and is more common in the Eastern Orthodox churches.
