Claddagh rings have been around for centuries dating back to 1700s. They are often grouped in a larger European tradition of rings known as fede rings. Fede rings get their name from the Italian phrase “mani in fede”, or “hands joined in faith.” What is known of the Claddagh ring is that they were produced in Galway, Ireland since the 1700s and they have strong ties to the small fishing village of Claddagh in Galway. The classic design shows two hands holding a heart topped with a crown. The Hands symbolize friendship, the Heart symbolizes true love and the Crown symbolizes loyalty. These rings are worn by women and men sometimes as wedding bands, engagements or can be a token of friendships.
