Baptized with the name Christopher meaning “Christ-Bearer”, he is generally represented, as in this icon, carrying the Christ Child on his back. Saint Christopher, listed as a martyr, is the patron saint of travelers. According to accounts he was large in stature and faith. He worked at a nearby river to help travelers cross where it is said he helped a young Christ cross the river carrying the weight of the world.
