In the New Testament, the crucifixion of Jesus tells of Christ being lifted up and nailed to a cross atop a hill. He was placed in between two criminals and his sides were pierced by a sword. The Icon of the Crucifixion is one of the most significant pieces and bears a deep meaning of Christ’ sacrifice for the sins of man. It is a symbol of our redemption after death and the possibility of an afterlife in Heaven.
